The history - year by year
Below are some of the most important moments in the history of AIK Football. The compilation is far from complete but gives you a good picture of what has happened at the club since the foundation in 1891.

On 15 February 1891, AIK (Allmänna Idrottsklubben) was founded. One of the initiators to its foundation, Isidor Behrens, became the first chairman. Initially AIK competed in athletics.

Football is introduced on initiative of Sigfrid "Sigge" Stenberg.

The first match between arch-rivals AIK and Djurgårdens IF is held. AIK wins 2-1.

Fritz Carling creates the present badge.

AIK win their first Swedish championship as Örgryte IS from Gothenburg are defeated 1-0 in the final. Örgryte have been the only previous champions since the competition started in 1896.

AIK defend their championship. The final against Örgryte’s second team is cancelled, but AIK are awarded the title thanks to defeating Örgryte’s first team 3-0 in the semifinal.

Theodor "Thodde" Malm and Kalle Ansén are selected for Swedens first international, against Norway.

The third championship is captured as IFK Uppsala are defeated 3-1 in the final.

AIK become champions for the fourth time. The final ends with a record 7-2 win over Hälsingborgs IF.

3-1 in the final against Djurgårdens IF means a fifth championship came AIK’s way.

Yet another championship is won after defeating IFK Eskilstuna 5-1 in the final.

AIK are one of twelve founder members of the football league. The historical first game ends with a 5-1 win at home to Västerås IK, followed by a 7-1 derby victory over Hammarby IF. AIK ends up fifth.

AIK are threatened by relegation but manage to survive. The escape of relegation is also the start of a glorious decade.

AIK defeats IFK Malmö 9-0 – still the record league win.

For the first time AIK win the league – Allsvenskan – and thereby collect their seventh Swedish championship.

As the first Swedish team AIK tour England, losing 1-6 to West Ham United FC and defeating Luton Town FC by 3-2.

AIK move from their previous home Stockholm stadion to newly built Råsunda Fotbollstadion – still the national arena. Later on the same year AIK win the championship again, nine points clear of runners-up IK Sleipner. Olle Zetherlund becomes top-scorer.

A friendly against Charlton Athletics FC at Råsunda ends with the odd score 7-7. AIK were 1-7 down in the second half!

Three AIK-players are included in the national squad that wins the 1948 Olympic gold medals in London: Sune Andersson, Henry Carlsson and Börje Leander. Rudolf "Putte" Kock, with a present at AIK, is the manager of the national team.

For the first time AIK wins the Swedish Cup after 1-0 in the final against Landskrona BoIS. Henry Carlsson turns professional in France – the first of five AIK-players to leave for professional football abroad during late 40s and early 50s.

AIK defend their cup-title, defeating Helsingborgs IF 3-2 in the final.

For the first time ever AIK are relegated from Allsvenskan (the premier league).

AIK are league-winners in Division II and back in Allsvenskan.

AIK are relegated for the second time ever.

AIK are back in Allsvenskan after one year in the second level. A goal on injury time in the last game of the season decided a promotion-thriller.

AIK enters the European cups for the first time as they defeat belgian Royal Daring 3-1 and 0-0 in the Fairs’ Cup.

AIK starts with women’s football.

The derby between AIK and Djurgårdens IF attracts a crowd of 40 669 – a new record attendance for AIK that would stand for 38 years.

AIK collect their third Cup-title as Landskrona BoIS are defeated 1-1 and 3-0.

For the third time AIK are relegated.

Like on the previous two occasions, AIK earn immediate promotion back to Allsvenskan.

AIK stay up in Allsvenskan after two nervous and dramatic qualification-games against Djurgården.

AIK are league-winners but lose in the semifinals of the Championship play-offs. (The Swedish championship was decided through a play-off during 1981-90.)

AIK are Cup-winners after winning the final against Östers IF on penalties.

For the first time in 55 years AIK are champions. The title was captured on the last day of the season after a dramatic away-win at Malmö FF (3-2).

AIK defeat Slavia Prague in the UEFA-cup but goes out to Parma AC.

AIK are Cup-winners for the fifth time after defeating Malmö FF in extra time.

AIK reach the quarter-final stage of the Cup-Winners’ Cup, where FC Barcelona ends AIK’s Cup-adventures. The third successive appearances in the Swedish Cup final results in a second successive win, 2-1 against IF Elfsborg. Gary Sundgren (Real Zaragoza), Magnus Hedman (Coventry City) and Pascal Simpson (norwegian Vålerengen) leave AIK for careers abroad.

For the tenth time AIK are champions, winning a decisive match at home against Örgryte IS (1-0) on the last day of the season. AIK won the league despite scoring fewer goals than any other side! The average attendance – 11 112 – was the best since 1972. Johan Mjällby leaves for Celtic FC.

AIK reaches the first group stage of the Champions League after defeating Belorussian FK Dnjepr-Transmasj Mogiljev and Greek AEK Athens in the qualifying rounds. Tough luck in the opening games against FC Barcelona and Arsenal FC – conceeding decisive goals on injury time – leaves AIK with only one point in six games (at home to AC Fiorentina). The team finish runners-up in the league, attracting an average attendance of 13 521, but once again wins the Swedish Cup after 1-0 on aggregate against IFK Göteborg.

AIK finish third in the league and lose the Cup final to Örgryte IS. In the UEFA Cup Belorussian FK Gomel are defeated in the preliminary round but 0-1 at home and 1-1 after extra time away to Danish champions Herfølge means the end of the international adventures. Average attendance rise to 14 474.

Like the previous season AIK end up third in the league and lose the Cup final (this time after penalties against IF Elfsborg). Welsh Carmarthen Town AFC and Danish OB (Odense) are defeated in the UEFA Intertoto Cup, but not French ES Troyes AC. Attendances improves again, this year AIK end up with an average of 15 496.

With three different coaches during the season (none of them sacked but all left) AIK only manages a fifth place in the league and for the third consecutive year lose the Cup final. Despite this the average attendance continues to improve and stopped at 16 551 this time.

Despite another disappointing season AIK attracts an average attendance of 17 302.

AIK have played in the top-division all seasons but three since Allsvenskan (the premier league) was introduced in 1924. In 2004 AIK were relegated for the first time in 25 years finishing second bottom after a poor season. The women´s team is second level league-winners and consequently back in the premier league for the first time since 1995.

One year in the second division was enough. AIK win the league and are back in Allsvenskan 2006. After a poor start the men in black prove the best and finish nine points clear of runners-up Östers IF. The women's team goes the opposite way, relegated from Allsvenskan after only one year.

AIK's comeback in Allsvenskan ended in title-race that lasted until the final day of the season. AIK finished as runners-up, scored more goals than any other team and attracted an average attendance of 21 434. The women's team are promoted back to the top flight.

AIK finished fifth in Allsvenskan and missed the chance to play in Europe after a defeat in the last game. In the UEFA-cup AIK first beat Glentoran FC and then FHK Liepajas Metalurgs before losing to Hapoel Tel-Aviv FC after 0-1 on aggregate. The women's team secured a place in Allsvenskan after a draw against KIF Örebro DFF (0-0) in the last game. The team had problems scoring goals and scored only ten times in 22 games. In the Swedish cup AIK went to the final, but lost to Umeå IK after coming back from 0-3 to 3-3 in the second half, before Marta scored the winner in the end.

AIK finished fifth in Allsvenskan a second year in a row after a strong finish. AIK won four of the five last games after a really poor performance during July to September that ended all hopes of a higher position. The women's team finished fourth in Damallsvenskan – their best result ever – after a strong second half of the season when AIK was the team with most points in the whole league.

AIK won Allsvenskan for the first time in 11 years after a dramatic end of the season. In the last game AIK visited IFK Göteborg and both teams had the chance to win the league. AIK entered the game one point ahead of the opponents and would settle with a draw. In the 32nd minute the home team took the lead but Antônio Flávio equalised in the 55th minute after he received the ball from Martin Kayongo-Mutumba. The goal meant that the gold was back in the hands of AIK and when Daniel Tjernström scored the winner in the 85th minute (after a great pass from Dulee Johnson) the title race was over. Six days after the win in Allsvenskan, AIK also won the Swedish cup for the eight time after a 2-0 victory at home to IFK Göteborg in front of 24 365 supporters. It was the first time AIK won "the double"! The women's team finished eight after an disappointing season. They were never contenders for the top spots in the table, but too strong to be involved in the relegation battle.

AIK had a disappointing season and were struggling most of the year. A good run in the end of the season with ten points out of the last four games secured the contract in Allsvenskan for 2011. In the Uefa Champions League qualification AIK went out against norwegian champions Rosenborg BK after 0-1 at home and 0-3 away. In the qualification for Uefa Europa League AIK almost made it to the group stage after 0-0 at home to PFC Levski Sofia and an early awaygoal by Mohamed Bangura in Sofia, but Levski scored two quick goals in the beginning of the second half and secured the group stage spot. The women's team came last in Damallsvenskan and will play in Norrettan in 2011. AIK had a very young and promising team, but too few goals scored put the team in trouble from the beginning of the season.

After a mediocre 2010 where AIK had to fight hard to avoid relegation, 2011 were again brighter times. AIK under new head coach Andreas Alm finished as runners-up, five points behind the champions Helsingborgs IF. AIK had a great spell during the summer when they won six games in a row in Allsvenskan. Out of the 15 league games between the beginning of June and mid-September AIK took 36 out of a possible 45 points. Teteh Bangura from Sierra Leaone was a huge success and scored 15 goals in 17 games before leaving AIK for the Turkish club Bursaspor, he was third in scoring in the league, despite leaving Sweden already in August. The women's team had a great season in Norrettan and won their division and were therefor again promoted to Damallsvenskan. AIK won 19 out of 22 games and secured the victory on the last day of the season.

AIK started the league very good and were undefeated until the ninth round when they lost away to IF Elfsborg (0-1). 2012 was the last season at Råsunda Stadium, the beloved home of AIK since 1937, and the historic and sentimental feeling was felt during the whole year, especially during the last games at the popular stadium. During the summer it was time to start the qualification for the Uefa Europa League and in the end of august it was time to write history when AIK went to Russia to face CSKA Moscow after being down 0-1 from the first leg. After a thrilling evening AIK won 2-0 and the news of the “shock” result spread around Europe. The team was in great shape after the energy boost from beating CSKA and followed up with two huge wins over Helsingborgs IF (2-1) and Djurgården (3-0) in the last ever derby game at Råsunda. In the Europa League the opponents were Napoli, PSV Eindhoven and FC Dnipro and after some good display from the Swedes, AIK finished the group stage with four points that could’ve been more. In the last ever game at Råsunda against the Italian side Napoli the game was decided from the penalty spot in the dying seconds and AIK lost 1-2 after a strong performance. In Allsvenskan the team couldn’t keep up the pace during the latter stages and finished fourth, only four points behind the champions Elfsborg. The women’s team couldn’t get the offensive production going and with only 16 goals scored in 22 games they were relegated after only one year in the top flight. They will play in the new Elitettan during 2013, a new nationwide league one level below Damallsvenskan.

The season was an emotional roller coaster for the team and the supporters. In the opening game at the newly built Friends Arena AIK set a new club attendance record when 43 466 people came to see AIK against Syrianska FC (0-0). AIK opened up the season bad and didn’t record a win until the fifth round away to Gefle IF FF (2-1). May the 2nd was to become a very, very sad day in the history of AIK when the first team goalkeeper Ivan Turina was found dead in his sleep. The following home game against IFK Göteborg (3-1) began with a minute silence to the memory of the big keeper from Croatia and play stopped in the 27th minute when players and supporters began to clap their hands. AIK came back strong from the shock and finished the season as runner-up, which means that they will qualify for the Uefa Europa League in the summer of 2014. The women’s team played very well in Elitettan and finished in second place, which meant that they in 2014 are back in Damallsvenskan.

AIK had a tough start of the season, at least at home. After a 0–2 defeat at home against the rivals IFK Göteborg in the premiere the pressure was on. The defeat was followed by a 1–1 draw against Örebro SK and a loss against IFK Norrköping FK and the AIK supporters had to wait until the fourth home game of the season to see the first home victory. The points gathered in the beginning of the season came from the away games where wins against Gefle IF FF and a fantastic win against Djurgården somehow carried AIK in to May when the team went unbeaten with three wins and two draws. AIK went into the summer break in great form and registered two straight wins in the restart of Allsvenskan. A shock defeat away against Linfield FC in the Uefa Europa League and against Falkenbergs FF in the league followed, but AIK went back to winning ways and went thru to the next qualification round in Europe and also beat IFK Göteborg away after a great 2–0 victory. The effects of a fixture packed July and August began to take its toll on the team and 1–1 against Djurgården and 2–4 against Örebro SK were disappointing results and the pressure was on after the international break in September. AIK had a terrible spell when the domestic league continued and only took one point from the next five games. The dream of gold vanished during the September games, but AIK find the rhythm during the last games and secured a place in Europe 2015/16 after winning seven points from the last three games of the season. The women’s team had a tough sesaon in Damallsvenskan and finished at tenth place after only scoring 13 goals in 20 games.

AIK started the competitive season with the group stage of the Swedish cup in an impressive way, but in the third and decisive game at home to Hammarby, in a game that draw 41 063 people to Friends Arena, AIK went out after losing 1–2. AIK started Allsvenskan in a good way and registered seven points from the first three rounds before losing 2–3 away to IF Elfsborg with all goals coming in the first 21 minutes. AIK continued to play great at home, but struggled away and didn't register a win on the road before the summer break. In the Uefa Europa League qualification rounds AIK won against VPS Vaasa and FC Shirak before going out against Atromitos FC from Athens after 1–4 on aggregate after losing the crucial home game 1–3. AIK continued to struggle away from home in Allsvenskan, but recorded the first away win of the season in the very important game against IFK Norrköping FK (2–1) which meant that AIK was fighting for silverware. In the home derby against Djurgården, AIK went down a man in the 32nd minute when central defender Noah Sonko Sundberg saw red, but despite being ten men for the rest of the match Mohamed Bangura scored the winner in the 64th minute. AIK were now playing at full throttle and registered nine straight wins in Allsvenskan during the fall which was a new club record before losing 0–1 away to Hammarby after a late header (88th minute) against AIK playing with ten men after a red card to Kenny Pavey after a tough studs up challenge put a temporary halt to the dreams of gold. In the 28th round AIK registered a wild win away to Halmstads BK after the home team scored an own goal in the 94th minute. In a huge home game against IFK Göteborg in front of 43 713 people (a new club record) AIK lost 1–2 after being 1–0 up and the result meant that AIK registered the first loss at home and had the gold dreams all but shattered. The women’s team came last in Damallsvenskan after two draws and 20 losses and were relegated to Elitettan.
